Gleichschaltung, in the words of this paper's translator, ``means the process of bringing organizations into line with Nazi ideology.'' This paper presents case studies of that process in three German mathematical organizations during the 1930's. The most detailed study is that of the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung, with Ludwig Bieberbach playing a key role. The original (1985) German version of this paper appeared in Jahrb. Überblicke Math. 1985, Math. Surv. 18, 83-103 (1985; Zbl 0565.01016).
