The author makes the observation that if there is a surjective ring homomorphism from R to S, then every hereditary torsion class of the category S-mod of left S-modules consists of the modules which belong to a suitable hereditary torsion class of R-mod, when regarded as left R- modules. This disproves a conjecture made by J. S. Golan.
