Inserting a suitable test function into the Selberg trace formula the author obtains a new formula for the logarithmic derivative \(\psi_{\Gamma}\) of the Selberg zeta function. This gives a new proof of the functional equation for \(\psi_{\Gamma}\) and a new determination of its poles and residues.
