The authors consider a least squares technique for the approximate identification of the density function defining a hysteresis operator of Preisach type from overdetermined measurements. It is investigated how the least squares error depends on the accuracy of the measurements and the function spaces in which the density is approximated. Sufficient conditions for convergence and some numerical examples are presented.
