We observe that the Steinberg module \(St_ F(G)\) of a (simple) graph G over a field F is isomorphic to the cycle space \(C_ F(D)\) of an arbitrary orientation D of G over F. Thus the Steinberg module of a geometry is a natural generalization of the cycle space of a graph. Our observation is then applied to determine the dimension of \(St_ F(G)\) and to decide when \(St_ F(G)\) is non-degenerate (with respect to the standard scalar product) - two questions of general interest in the theory of geometries.
