The author constructs a theory of characteristic classes for principal bundles \(f:\quad E\to M\) with values in the Fulton-MacPherson bivariant cohomology ring \(A^*(M)\) of M. Here f is a morphism of schemes over an algebraically closed field k and when \(k={\mathbb{C}}\) the topological version of these results is classical and due to Leray and Borel.
