The paper investigates the stability of a steadily flowing layer. The upper free surface is subject to convective cooling, and the lower boundary is rigid and insulated. Unsteady three-dimensional momentum and energy equations are reduced to two-dimensional equations with some modifications. Resulting equations are solved using periodic boundary conditions which describe roll cell motion. The analysis is carried out using a SIMPLER based code. The initiation of longitudinal roll cell has been related to critical Rayleigh number and to the associated wave number.
