The author is known as one of the leading specialists in the topological theory of nonlinear Fredholm maps on Banach manifolds. In this survey, he applies previously obtained abstract results to optimal control problems. In particular, he studies topological properties of operators arising in control systems, proves corresponding existence results, and discusses extensions to functional differential equations with time lag (of neutral type).
