This paper deals with the global existence of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem associated with a first-order quasilinear strictly hyperbolic system with small initial total variation. Using the continuous Glimm functional the existence of a global classical solution has been established earlier in the literature when the initial data is of compact support and small initial total variation, and the system is linearly degenerate. The paper generalizes this result to the case when the system is weakly linearly degenerate.
