This paper concerns the analysis of mathematical models describing population dynamics problems in heterogeneous domains. Discontinuities appear in the coefficients of divergence form operators and in reaction terms. Global posedness results are obtained. For models with a great degree of heterogeneity, simpler models with constant coefficients are derived (via homogenization method). Long time behavior is also investigated.
