So-called \(L\)-embedded and \(M\)-embedded spaces give important examples in Banach space geometry [see \textit{P. Harmand}, \textit{D. Werner} and \textit{W. Werner}, ``\(M\)-ideals in Banach spaces and Banach algebras'' (Lect. Notes Math. 1547, Springer Verlag, Berlin) (1993; Zbl 0789.46011)]. In this paper, the author proves the equivalence of the weak and the weak\(^*\) fixed point property for such spaces and applies this to obtain new fixed point theorems.
