The pull-back of a cohomology class \(\eta\) in the Jacobian fibration associated to a flat family of smooth curves is studied by finding an explicit line bundle \(L\) such that \(c_1(L)=\eta\). Applications are given to the question of ampleness of line bundles on the family of curves and on its symmetric products.
