In the article under review the author clarifies some historical issues concerning results on the surjectivity of the exponential function in the work of Engel and Study. A central point is that Engel's work contains the false claim that the exponential function of the groups \(\text{PSO}_n(\mathbb C)\) and \(PSp_{2n}(\mathbb C)\) is surjective, and this claim has been cited at prominent places of the \(20^{th}\) century mathematical literature such as Bourbaki's historical notes.
