This paper concerns a nonlinear system of wave equations modeling the motion in space of an elastic string. One main purpose of this paper is to provide existence and uniqueness results using the theory of quasilinear hyperbolic systems. The second main target is a controllability result for an elastic string governed by the nonlinear system.
