The author proposes a method for instability detection in the Orr-Sommerfeld problem. When required, an unstable eigenvalue can be found by using a procedure analogous to the continuation in a parameter, i.e., without performing any two-dimensional search. Topological methods are invoked to localize eigenvalues, and a special method of differential transfer is used.
