The authors analyzes a whirlpool (i.e., swirling free-surface flows in a gravitational field). A simplified mathematical model is proposed and substantiated, based on time-independent Navier-Stokes equations in which all nonazimuthal viscous stress components are discarded. Some details of a numerical implementation of the model are discussed.
