The author relies on a modified method of characteristics combined with streamline diffusion as developed by \textit{M. B. Allen} and \textit{B. Liu} [Numer. Methods Partial Differ. Equations 11, 255-274 (1995; Zbl 0826.65085)] for the numerical treatment of convection dominated convection-diffusion equations. While their method decays in order in case the characteristics leave the domain the author develops a lumped version of their method and proves its accuracy.
