Sastry automorphisms (Q1858251)

In studying the embedding of the Ree groups \(^2F_4\) in the untwisted groups \(F_4\) over a field in characteristic 2 N. S. N. Sastry was led to the problem of characterizing certain type of automorphism \(f\) of a field \(k\) of characteristic two, the definition is too long and technical to be stated here. In this paper the author gives a complete solution. There are 22 infinite families and 22 sporadic solutions over small fields. There are very clever calculations and at some places even computer programs based on MATHEMATICA are used. In contrast to many other papers the author not just says that from now on a computer is used, he explains what kind of programs he is using and what these programs really do. The author at any part of the paper really worries about the possible reader and his understanding.
