The paper analyzes the relationship between a Diffractive Optical Element (DOE) and its light intensity pattern, provided that the diffracting aperture is large compared with the wavelength and the diffracted field is observed not too close to the aperture. Using the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction theory, the authors present a stationary-phase analysis of the Kirchhoff integral when the DOE has a multiscale structure. Moreover, it is shown how the simplified formula can be used to design a DOE with given intensity pattern. Several numerical examples illustrate the accuracy of the asymptotic approximation.
