A new estimate for the global error of collocation methods applied to solve two-point boundary value problems is presented. A proof of the asymptotic correctness of this estimate is given for regular problems. The method can be applied also to singular problems. This estimate is used as a basis for a reliable and efficient adaptive mesh procedure. Its most remarcable feature is the proper grid adjustment in the singular case, correctly reflecting the solution behavior and unaffected by the unsmoothness of the direction field.
