The article is devoted to word hyperbolic groups generated by local geodesics in a given Riemann manifold. Their growth rate as word groups is studied. It is shown that their growth rate is of exponential type and estimates of exponential growth rates are given. Inequalities between exponential growth rates of groups and their quotients by normal subgroups are proved.
