The paper focuses on a mixed problem in an exterior domain for the linear dissipative wave equation. The purpose is to find the diffusion phenomenon for this problem by using the time integral method developed by the author and \textit{T. Matsuyama} in [Sci. Math. Jap. 55, 33-42 (2001; Zbl 1005.35020)]. By means of introducing the total energy to the model equation, the main decay estimate in appropriate spaces is obtained.
