The authors construct the Dixmier-Douady class of an \(S^1\)-central extension of a Lie groupoid. It takes its value in the third cohomology group of the simplicial manifold naturally associated with a Lie groupoid. The construction is based on the analogy with the construction of the first Chern class in terms of the curvature of a line bundle.
