The author derives an equation of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type which describes the transient one-dimensional motion of ground water with slowly varying free surface and weakly permeable bed. Then appropriate boundary conditions are derived for this equation. The solution of the corresponding boundary value problem is obtained in terms of biorthogonal series, and some connections with Laplace and Lavrent'ev-Bitsadze equations are pointed out.
