A stochastic evolutionary strategy utilizing parallel computation is developed for the optimal design of flexible multibody systems. It is claimed that the procedure provides for a significant reduction in computing time. Application to transportation systems -- specifically, to railway system design -- is illustrated and envisioned. The paper advances the state-of-the-art of this promising optimization procedure. The paper should be of interest and use to both theoreticians and software developers.
