The authors consider the problem of optimization of hydrothermal systems. They introduce a suitable notion of equivalence and observe that a number of power stations can be substituted by a single one that behaves equivalently to the entire set. Then using classical method of Calculus of Variations the minimizers are computed in the case where the cost functions are second order polynomials. Some numerical computation is also proposed.
