An algorithm, based on a spinor decomposition, is proposed to perform the Petrov-Plebanski and the Segre classifications, in 4 dimensions, of the trace-free Ricci tensor \(S_{ab}= R_{ab}-(R/4)g_{ab}\). The algorithm is presented as an improvement of some known ones.
