    The author proposes a brief survey of the results, approaches and ideas which have been developed by a Moscow group of topologists. In the author's opinion these results were a source of the establishment and development of noncommutative geometry. Also, some new results are presented which are obtained in determining homotopy invariants of multiply connected manifolds.
