The authors generalize to oriented matroids the notion of ``link numbers'' in Euclidian space. As an application they give a matroidal proof that a certain triangulation of the Möbius strip has no geometric embedding into Euclidean 3-space, a result of \textit{U. Brehm} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 89, 519--522 (1983; Zbl 0526.57013)].
