Consider \(K\) a finite simplicial complex. The authors show that the sequences of normalized Betti numbers still converge in the case when the limit cover of \(K\) is non-regular. In the second part of the paper non-free measure-preserving ergodic actions of a countable group on a standard Borel probability space are studied. The results are connected to the second author's papers [Invent. Math. 139, 41--98 (2000; Zbl 0939.28012)] and [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 95, 93--150 (2002; Zbl 1022.37002)].
