Consider a system with 4 components which are ordered like the elements of a \(2\times2\) matrix. Each component is working for an exponential amount of time with rate \(\lambda\), and is then sent to a repair facility. The facility consists of a single server with repair rate \(\mu\). The system fails when two adjacent components are in the repair facility. The author computes the mean time to first system failure. Some comments about a system with \(2n\) components, which are ordered like the elements of a \(2\times n\) matrix, are also given.
