The author constructs the Teichmüller map between two Riemann surfaces of the same genus \(\geq 2\) by means of a maximum-minimum approach proposed by Gerstenhaber and Rauch in 1954. The construction is based on harmonic map theory for a class of metrics on the target which includes singular metrics.
