The authors propose a method for the variational design of algebraic curves based on globally defined, truly geometric fairness criteria, such as the elastic bending energy. In addition to the fairness measures, certain feasibility criteria for the algebraic curve segment are taken into account. The computational technique uses an SQP (sequential quadratic programming) type method for constrained optimization. Thus it is shown that the techniques of variational design can be used not only for parametric curves and surfaces, but also for curves in implicit representation.
