The investigation in this article is concerned with the discrete logarithm problem in a finite simple field GF\((p)\). Some number sequences associated with approximations of continued fractions are introduced and studied. A new algorithm based on the rational approximation for solving the problem of discrete logarithm representation of a given number is introduced. Some computational results are also given.
