The authors provide a theoretical explanation of the empirically observed excellent long time behaviour of symmetric multistep methods in the numerical integration of Newtonian equations of motion. The main tool is a backward error analysis based on modified differential equations. It allows in particular for the derivation of long time bounds for parasitic solution components. Special attention is given to the conservation of energy and angular momentum.
