The author states and explains very precisely the most important conjectures in the areas of Galois representations and arithmetic respectively automorphic \(L\)-functions. This explanation (an expansion of the author's ICM-talk from Beijing) is mainly meant to serve the general mathematical audience as a guideline. Some recent results are outlined in the final chapter.
