A second-order theory is used to describe shock wave structures. The equations obtained are solved using an original finite difference global scheme, which relies on a discretized version of the governing equations and boundary conditions, and on a global Newton iteration procedure. The results obtained in one dimension with exact and simplified fluxes are close to experimental measurements of the shock thickness in a monatomic gas for upstream Mach numbers below 10.
