The present paper deals with characterizations of the three types of developable surfaces (without planar points) in affine 3-space, using the induced connection. It is shown that certain torsion-free connections on 2-dimensional Riemannian manifolds can be realized on surfaces of type number one (i.e. the rank of the second fundamental form is one).
