This talk, given at a commemoration of the 100th birthday of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, contains brief historical remarks describing the context of the discovery of the inverse scattering method by the author and his collaborators. The author stresses in particular the importance of the process of asymptotic reduction of an equation to a simpler model (as in the reductive perturbation method) which indeed explains the occurrence of the KdV equation in a large number of unrelated applications.
