The authors give a brief and clear review of the correspondence between integrable PDE in \(1 + 1\) dimensions (sinh-Gordon, mKdV, Liouville) and 2D metrics with Gauss curvature \(- 1\). They refer to their paper in Itogi Nauki Tekh., Ser. Probl. Geom. 23, 99-130 (1991; Zbl 0741.35072) in connection with a very briefly sketched `physical' interpretation.
