For isotropic material the Marcus moments, a combination of bending moments in two orthogonal directions, can be utilised to simplify the governing equation of plate bending. That as well holds for sandwich plates with thin faces if they are modelled according to the first order shear deformation theory. Comparison of differential equations and boundary conditions leads to a relationship between sandwich and Kirchhoff plate deflections valid for simply supported plates of polygonal shape or for circular plates under axisymmetric loading.
