The author presents a unification of the gravitational and Yang-Mills fields obtained by extending the diffeomorphisms of space-time to a larger group which is called the conservation group. This latter group is the largest group of coordinate transformations under which the conservation laws are covariant. Two theories which are invariant under the conservation group are constructed, and both imply the Einstein equations of general relativity with a stress-energy tensor of a non- Abelian Yang-Mills field (with massive quanta). Quantization of these theories will be considered in a subsequent paper.
