The paper deals with intervals, sets and bags (= multisets), where a bag means a generalization of a set in which multiple occurrences of elements are allowed. Advantages and disadvantages of these quantities are discussed, bags as data types in programming languages are suggested. Examples are presented in which the application of bags is illustrated and in which a natural parallelism, inherent in bag-processing algorithms, is exploited.
