A simplified method of analysis is suggested to predict the nonlinear dynamic response of submerged stiffened plates subjected to underwater explosions. Two solution algorithms are exploited by assuming that the fluid-structure interaction follows the simple Hains acoustic approximation [\textit{F. D. Hains}, Fluid-structure interaction by the method of characteristics, pp. 23-32. Shock and Vibration Information Center, Washington, DC, USA (1983)]. The first is a closed form procedure derived from a set of coupled linearized differential equations for one- way stiffened panels, and the second is a semi-analytical procedure obtained by approximating the structural response as a sequence of instantaneous mode responses for two-way stiffened panels. The full details can be found in [\textit{J. Jiang} and \textit{M. D. Olson}, Modelling of underrwater shock-induced response of thin plate structures. Structural Research Series, Report No. 39, Department of Civil Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B. C., Canada (1994)].
