The author presents a brief overview of general linear methods for solving initial value problems in ordinary differential equations and then describes the various features of the practically important subclass known as diagonally implicit multistage integration methods (DIMSIMs). Examples of such methods, a numerical illustration, and comments on their implementation complement the discussion. Further developments may be found in the paper by the author and \textit{Z. Jackiewicz} [BIT 33, No. 3, 452-472 (1993; Zbl 0795.65043)].
