The authors analyse an explicit scheme for the solution of partial differential equations, presented by \textit{J. L. Richardson, R. C. Ferrell} and \textit{L. N. Long} [J. Comput. Phys. 104, No. 1, 69-74 (1993; Zbl 0766.76061)] for solving nonlinear fluid dynamics problems. The present study, with application to the one-dimensional diffusion equation, shows that the scheme is indeed unconditionally stable, but only conditionally consistent.
