The paper uses the idea of upper and lower solutions to establish the existence of solutions to two-point boundary value problems for a class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The equations considered arise in the study of the p-Laplacian, diffusion theory, fluid mechanics and of a gas in a porous medium. The existence of similarity solutions to a certain Rayleigh problem is also considered.
