Via what is called a ``Connection Theorem'', the authors establish a connection between \(k\)-wise independent sets of random variables and sets of orthogonal latin \(k\)-cubes. Some known results on latin \(k\)-cubes are surveyed, and then these results are used to obtain several new results concerning the maximal size of \(k\)-wise independent sets of random variables.
