This is an exposition of asymptotic cycles on flows on compact spaces as begun by the seminal work of \textit{S. Schwartzman} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 66, 270-284 (1957; Zbl 0207.22603)] of forty years ago. Special attention is given to the calculations for suspension flows and one-dimensional minimal sets.
