On a nonsingular \(n\)-dimensional projective variety, we give explicit numerical conditions that force a free pencil on a positive reduced irreducible divisor to extend to a free pencil on the ambient variety. This generalizes a result of Serrano for curves on a surface. We also give similar results in prime characteristic.
